The Meaning of Columbus Day
Columbus Day is celebrated every year in October to remember the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. In 1492, he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and reached the Americas, changing world history. For many years, this day was seen as a celebration of exploration and courage. However, today people also discuss the effects of European colonization on Indigenous peoples. Some states in the U.S. celebrate “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” instead, to honor native cultures and their history.
Columbus Day helps us learn about the past — both its achievements and its lessons — and reminds us to respect all peoples and cultures.
