The Story and Debate of Columbus Day
Columbus Day is a national holiday in the United States that marks the day Christopher Columbus reached the Americas on October 12, 1492. His journey across the Atlantic Ocean was supported by Spain, and it opened the way for European exploration and settlement in the New World. For many, Columbus was a symbol of bravery and discovery.
However, over time, people began to view this day differently. Columbus’s arrival also marked the beginning of great suffering for many Native Americans, whose lands and lives were changed forever. Because of this, several states and cities now celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, honoring the cultures and traditions that existed long before Columbus.
Columbus Day reminds us that history has many sides. It teaches us to explore the truth, respect different cultures, and learn from the past to build a better future.
