The True Meaning of Sweetest Day
Sweetest Day is a holiday that encourages people to express love, kindness, and appreciation. It is celebrated every year on the third Saturday in October, mainly in the Midwest and parts of the United States. While many think of it as a romantic holiday, its origin and message go far beyond romance.
The holiday began in 1921, when Herbert Birch Kingston, a candy company employee in Cleveland, wanted to bring happiness to others. He and his friends gave out candy and gifts to orphans, the sick, and those in need. His simple idea — to show people they were loved and remembered — quickly grew into a local tradition.
Over the years, Sweetest Day has evolved. People now celebrate it by sharing sweets, cards, or kind gestures with loved ones. Couples give chocolates and flowers, while families and friends use the day to say “thank you” or “I care.” Many people also volunteer or donate to charities to keep the original spirit alive.
Sweetest Day is not about expensive gifts — it’s about thoughtful actions. It reminds us that kindness can be simple and powerful. Whether through candy, a smile, or a helping hand, we can make the world sweeter — one small act at a time.
