Hanukkahmas
The flames stretch up high while bright candles burn small
The tree lights glow red, gold and green
The window reflects all the lights in our room,
And ensures our menorah is seen.
We celebrate Christmas – when Jesus was born –
Just like Mum was brought up to do,
But Hanukkah’s also at this time of year
Dad’s customs are part of us too.
The mince pies are ready in Mum’s holly tin,
And Bubbe’s brought Hanukkah gelt
We all spin the dreidel and gamble our stash
Then scoff it before it can melt.
The latkes and doughnuts are piled up in bowls
The Wise Men look down from the shelf
Dad kisses Mum under the mistletoe – yuk! –
Then we all settle down to watch ‘Elf’.
It probably isn’t what everyone does –
Some people think mixing is wrong,
But the love and the light of our ‘Hanukkahmas’
Form the notes of our family’s song.
