Author: Great American Smokeout day

The History and Purpose of the Great American Smokeout

The Great American Smokeout began in the 1970s when people were first encouraged to stop smoking for one day. What started as a small campaign has grown into a national movement. Today, millions of Americans participate by quitting smoking or helping others quit.

The American Cancer Society uses this day to remind everyone of the health risks of smoking and the many benefits of quitting. It’s also a time to celebrate those who have succeeded in living tobacco-free. The Great American Smokeout proves that change starts with a single decision — the decision to care for yourself and your future.
