Bluebird
BLUEBIRD
While going for a quiet drive
Along a country road,
We saw a bluebird circling,
Then perch upon a post.
Silently we stopped nearby,
And silently we watched;
As he flew from perch to perch,
His patience, too, we matched.
We only dared to shift our eyes-
We dared not move or talk
Until he was convinced that we
Were nothing but a rock.
Our patience was rewarded
As his patience now gave out.
We knew his nest was nearby
By the tid-bit in his mouth.
Down to the post he dropped
And seemed to disappear.
The knowledge was so thrilling
It lived with us all year.
We know where morel mushrooms
Pop up in the spring.
We know where tadpoles gather
In the gently bubbling stream.
We've fond the scarlet berries
Of the minty wintergreen,
And the fruiting jack-o'lantern
Has shown us its silent gleam.
Of all the things that we have known,
More thrilling than the rest
Is the knowledge that we now know where
There is a bluebird's nest.
