The Chipmunk

My friends all know that I am shy,
But the chipmunk is twice and shy and I.
He moves with flickering indecision
Like stripes across the television.
He's like the shadow of a cloud,
Or Emily Dickinson read aloud.

Although this version of the poem seems to be universally reprinted this way, I can't help believing that there is a misprint in the second line. With Nash dead we can't ask him whether he really wrote, "But the Chipmunk is twice as shy as I." His starting the line with a "But" seems to imply that the gist of the line should contrast with the first line, which would happen if the two "and" s were actually "as" s.
